Optimist Our Learn to Sail Optimist class is sailed on Opti sail cubes, a rotomolded plastic version of an Optimist dinghy, and Optimists. Sailors will learn to leave and return to the dock, basic sailing maneuvers, sailing on all points of sail, and how to right a boat from a capsize. Every sailor, regardless of experience, will have to pass a swim and capsize test the first day of the season Teens Sailing The teens sailing program focuses on a more advanced curriculum appropriate to age and skill level, teaching basic knots, rigging, basic maneuvers, right of way concepts, and more. Each sailor must pass a swim and capsize test the first day of the season, regardless of sailing experience. Optimist Green Introduction The Green Fleet Optimist sailor has already learned how to sail but wants to take the next step into their developing passion for Sailing. In Green Fleet, sailors learn the basics of racing: how a Regatta functions, advanced boat handling, tactics and strategy. The Green Fleet Optimist program is a great way for a young sailor to foster self-discipline, confidence, camaraderie, and respect for the sport. These sailors are dedicated and motivated to continue perfecting their sailing skills, and are recommended to purchase their own boat and gear. Sailors advance into this fleet once they demonstrate a working knowledge of the racing rules and tactics, and a maturity level appropriate to the level of competition. Fleet Assignments by USODA Guidelines White Fleet is for skippers who are 10 years old or under. Blue Fleet is for skippers who are 11 or 12 years old Red Fleet is for skippers who are 13, 14, or 15 years old Optimist RWB Regatta Schedule Feb 4-5 Valentines Day Regatta St Petersburg YC Feb 11-12 Buccaneer Blast Upper Keys SC March 4-5 Sunshine State Champs USSC Martin County April 6-9 Spring Fling Coral Reef YC May 11-14 Team Trials Brant Beach YC United States Optimist Dinghy Association (USODA)
